Former U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon David Hale said Lebanon is facing a \u201ccrucial moment”, arguing that the country today has a greater opportunity to restore sovereignty than it did in 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking to the Editor in Chief, George Wardini on Happy Hour<\/em>, Hale said Hezbollah\u2019s power has been significantly weakened, while Iran\u2019s ability to influence events inside Lebanon is no longer comparable to Syria\u2019s role in the 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t think Iran has the power that Assad had,\u201d Hale said, noting that Syria once had deep political, economic and security networks across Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale argued that Hezbollah remains a central obstacle to Lebanese sovereignty, but said the question is not only about disarming the group. According to him, Lebanon must also address who will politically represent the Shia community after Hezbollah\u2019s decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He added that Hezbollah cannot simply transform into a normal political party without its weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHezbollah was a militia that became a party in order to preserve the militia,\u201d Hale said. \u201cOther parties could go back to being parties because that is what they originally were. This isn\u2019t the case with Hezbollah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the Lebanese Army, Hale said U.S. support was not designed to push the army into a direct confrontation with Hezbollah, but to ensure that Lebanon has a credible alternative when the time comes. He said the risk of civil strife may be overstated, but stressed that any decision carries high stakes and must be made by the Lebanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale also said Israel must recognize that excessive military action in Lebanon can become counterproductive, especially if it reinforces Hezbollah\u2019s narrative among Shia communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He described Lebanon as possibly the best current opportunity for a breakthrough with Israel, saying the disputes between the two countries are mostly security-related and emotional, rather than territorial or existential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Asked whether Lebanon is too weak to negotiate with Israel, Hale rejected the argument, saying opportunities like this \u201cdo not last\u201d and that Lebanon should not miss the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale
